News snippets about the upcoming sequel "NIGHT FLIER 2"

As proof positive of how hard it is to make it as a filmmaker, consider the case of Night Flier director Mark Pavia. Here you have a first time director who, working independently, did what seasoned pros have failed to do with all the resources of major studios backing them up - he made a damn good Stephen King adaptation. As most fans agree, The Night Flier was a real find and announced the arrival of a true up and comer in Pavia. But that was in '97 and what has Pavia done since? Not directing movies, obviously - although he had been attached to an adaptation of the Deadworld comic for a time but that project quickly went nowhere. Frankly, the lack of anything new from Pavia just doesn't seem fair. Well, the good and bad news is that Pavia has something in the pipeline finally (we hope). According to Bloody Disgusting, Richard Rubenstein's New Amsterdam Productions is gearing up for a Night Flier sequel, with the official title of Night Flier II: Fear of Flying and Pavia is slated to write and direct.

The plot apparently follows the story of a star reporter who finds out more about the sky bound vamp than they'd care to know and sets out to stop him. Eh, sounds a little too familiar but just the same I'd love to see Pavia give the sequel a shot. The bad side to this is that it's ridiculous that seven years after Night Flier the only project Pavia can get off the ground (no pun intended) is a Night Flier sequel. You know, I'm not saying that The Night Flier was the greatest thing since film was invented but hey, it was good and lots of far less talented folk get to direct movies left and right so how is it that a guy like Pavia can prove himself his first time out and then have so much trouble with his second film?

Maybe Pavia is doing just fine and the lack of output from him is simply by choice. I don't know. But I'm guessing if it were up to him he'd have done a lot more since '97. Here's hoping he can do a Night Flier II - and that it might lead to something other than Night Flier III.

Producer Richard P. Rubinstein, best-known for his collaborations with George Romero on MARTIN, DAWN OF THE DEAD and others, gave Fango the scoop on his upcoming genre projects.

Rubinstein is also still involved in a follow-up to the 1997 Stephen King adaptation THE NIGHT FLIER. "Mark Pavia, director of the original, came to me with a screenplay for the sequel," the producer reports. "I´m don´t usually like sequels, but I thought the script was good and gave it to Stephen to see what he thought." Not only did King enjoy the screenplay, he decided to get directly involved. "I thought the script would sit on his shelf for a while," Rubinstein says, "but suddenly, Steve came to me with a corrected and rewritten screenplay by himself. When I told Mark, I thought he was going to have a heart attack. There were some things he would miss from his original version, but now he had an improved one co-written by Stephen King himself!"

Fangoria reports that there are plans for The Night Flier 2; "There’s talk of NIGHT FLIER 2," Pavia reveals. "I would write and direct again, with [original author] Stephen King giving his blessing on the story. Miguel Ferrer’s Richard Dees character won’t be in it, though I did toy with the idea of bringing Dees back as a TERMINATOR-style servant to [lead vampire] Dwight Renfield. Renfield and Katherine Blair [played by Julie Entwisle, now Pavia’s wife, in the original film] will be returning."
